John Schmeltzer

John Schmeltzer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, is the Engleman/LivermoreProfessorin Community Journalism, a position that was created by Charles and Jean Engleman and Ed Livermore Sr. to support the development of community newspaper reporters and editors.

Schmeltzer’s 35-year career at the Chicago Tribune was equally split between reporting and editing. He was part of a group during his first 15 years there as a reporter and editor that was instrumental in expanding the readership of the Tribune in the Chicago suburbs via targeted editions. between was a reporter and editor From 1997 to 2003, he covered the aerospace industry and covered many of the events that led to the Tribune being awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. In recent years, Schmeltzer has worked to expand readership through social media and online newspaper editions. In addition to the Pulitzer, Schmeltzer also was a finalist for the UCLA Anderson School of Management Gerald Loeb Award for business journalism, and numerous other industry awards. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service award from his alma mater, Northern Illinois University in 2002.
